Bleeding Gums
Bleeding gums are usually a sign that you have had gum disease (gingivitis) for some time.
If the cause is gingivitis, then brushing daily with Elgydium Toothpaste helps to prevent bleeding gums.
They can also be treated with Eludril Mouthwash.
Other causes of bleeding gums include:
- an injury to your gums, perhaps caused by brushing your teeth too hard, flossing carelessly or wearing badly fitting dentures
- scurvy - a disease caused by severe lack of vitamin C
- vitamin K deficiency - vitamin K is vital to the blood-clotting process
- more serious medical conditions such as leukaemia or haemophilia.
If you experience bleeding gums, visit your dentist as soon as possible so they can find the cause and treat the problem.

Preventing And Treating Bleeding Gums
Do not ignore bleeding gums. Visit your dentist as soon as possible. They will check and professionally clean your teeth and gums.
It is important to have any plaque or tartar removed by your dentist or hygienist. No matter how well you brush and floss, you generally reach only 60 per cent of the surface of your teeth.
Get your teeth checked regularly - every six months - particularly if you have experienced other symptoms of gum disease (gingivitis) and periodontal disease (periodontitis) such as sore gums or swollen gums.
Your dentist will advise you on an appropriate gingivitis treatment. For decades, oral healthcare experts have recommended chlorhexidine as the gold standard antibacterial treatment.
It is also important to take good daily care of your teeth and gums:
- Brush with a medicinal toothpaste that contains chlorhexidine (such as Elgydium) - how to brush your teeth
- Floss every day - how to floss
- Use a good quality mouthwash, switching to a chlorhexidine-based mouthwash (such as Eludril) as a short-term gum disease treatment
- Eat a healthy diet - find out how to avoid hidden sugars
