Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcerMouth ulcers are very common and can be very painful, usually lasting for about a week.  It is not known what causes mouth ulcers, although bacteria may be a contributing cause in some cases.  Other known factors include minor injuries (which can be caused by a slip of the toothbrush or after a dental procedure), stress, hormonal changes and allergies.  Occasionally, mouth ulcers can be symptoms of other medical conditions such as Crohn’s or Coeliac disease.  It is also common in auto-immune disorders.

Signs and symptoms of Mouth Ulcers

Ulcers are small, shallow open sores that may be round or oval and have an inflamed red border.  The centre may be white, grey or yellowish.  They can develop anywhere in the lining of the mouth on the insides of the lips or cheeks, on the floor of the mouth or on the gums.  They may occur singly or in clusters.

Treatment of Mouth Ulcers

Analgesic (pain-killing) mouthwashes and sprays such as Eludril Mouthwash and Eludril Spray may help to ease the pain while healing takes place.

Eludril Spray, which can be applied directly to the affected area, can be particularly effective.

If a mouth ulcer persists for more than a month despite treatment, you should consult your GP.
