Oral Thrush (Oral Candidiasis)

Oral ThrushOral thrush is known medically as oral candidiasis and is an infection caused by a fungus.  It can affect any warm, moist area of the body, but its
occurrence in the mouth is relatively common.

The fungi responsible occur naturally in the mouth but are usually kept in check by the natural presence of bacteria.  If an imbalance occurs (for example, during prolonged use of antibiotics), the fungi may start to dominate.  Pregnancy, diabetes, immunosuppressive drugs or conditions, as well as a lack of saliva, can all lead to oral thrush.

Signs and symptoms of Oral Thrush (oral candidiasis)

Oral thrush is relatively simple to recognise. The most obvious sign to watch out for is a characteristic white membrane on inner surfaces of the mouth, most easily seen on the surface of the tongue.

Treatment of Oral Thrush (oral candidiasis)

Because it is a fungal infection, oral thrush requires an effective antifungal therapy.  Eludril Mouthwash is recommended as an effective treatment for oral candidal infections and is available from your local pharmacy or dentist.

Anyone suffering from oral thrush for the first time or who has a severe or prolonged case should consult their GP before embarking on treatment.
