Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can mean anything from getting a mild twinge of pain to having severe discomfort that can continue for many hours.  It can also be an early warning sign of more serious dental problems.

Who Gets Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth can affect people of all ages but is more common in people aged between 20 and 40.  Women are more likely to be affected than men. 

You are more likely to feel the pain of sensitivity when drinking or eating something cold and sometimes with hot foods or drinks.  Some people are affected by sweet or acidic food and drink.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitivity occurs when the outer layer of enamel is worn away and the inner layer of the tooth, called dentine, is exposed.  This can be caused by toothbrush abrasion (brushing too hard and brushing from side to side, which causes the enamel to be worn away, particularly where the teeth meet the gums).  If the tooth enamel is eroded by acidic food and drinks, then sensitivity will occur.  Also, if the gums have receded then the roots are exposed and they do not have an enamel layer to protect them.  Gum disease is also a common cause where the build-up of plaque or tartar can result in gums receding and lead to sensitivity.  Other causes include tooth grinding and also tooth bleaching.

How To Prevent Sensitive Teeth

In order to prevent sensitive teeth you should:

• Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste such as Elgydium Sensitive.

• When brushing, use small circular movements with a soft or medium bristled brush.

• Avoid brushing from side to side.

• Change your toothbrush regularly ­ every two to three months, or sooner if it becomes worn.

• Have sugary foods and fizzy and acidic drinks less often and only at mealtimes.

• If you grind your teeth, discuss this with your dentist.

• If you plan to have your teeth bleached, discuss the possibility of sensitivity with your dentist first.
