Sore Throat (Pharyngitis)

A sore throat can also be known as pharyngitis, this is a condition which almost everyone has suffered from in their life.  Sore throats (pharyngitis) are one of the most common reasons for people to visit their doctor.  Unfortunately, there is often little that your doctor can do to help as the most usual cause is a virus and the antibiotics patients often ask for have no effect on viral infections.  However, in some cases a sore throat (pharyngitis) can be caused by bacteria and these instances are often more serious.

A sore throat (pharyngitis) is usually described as a pain at the back of the mouth, frequently accompanied by discomfort in swallowing.  Often, with the common minor sore throat (pharyngitis), you’ll usually have all the usual symptoms of a common cold ­ for example, redness of the throat, enlarged and tender lymph nodes in the neck as well as a slight fever and occasionally earache.

Warning signs to look for:

The most serious forms of bacterial pharyngitis can be accompanied by a high fever (over 101°F), general upset, swelling of the soft palate or larynx and, in some cases, a white or yellow discharge draining down the throat.
