Badly inflamed and swollen gums can look and feel very painful. The gums appear bright red - especially the papillae (the triangular areas of gum between the teeth).
Gingivitis (gum disease) is the most common cause of swollen gums. It can be treated with a medicinal mouthwash such as Eludril and specially formulated toothpaste such as Elgydium.
Both contain chlorhexedine - recommended over the years by oral healthcare professionals as the gold standard gingivitis treatment.

Swollen Gums: Causes
Gum disease is not the only cause of swollen gums.
They can also be associated with pregnancy and wisdom teeth problems. Other causes include poorly fitting dentures, infections or malnutrition.
Swollen gums can be made worse by eating the wrong diet, food that is not sufficiently nutritious.
Gum swellings can also be exacerbated by irritants such alcohol or tobacco.
See your dentist if you are suffering from sore or swollen gums or any other gingivitis symptoms such as bleeding or receding gums.
Regular dental check-ups are recommended, every six months if possible. It is important to have your teeth cleaned properly to remove plaque and tartar which can lead to gum disease.
