Tonsillitis
What is Tonsillitis?
The tonsils are two small rounded masses of tissue situated at the back of the mouth where it becomes the pharynx. The tonsils act as defenders against infection at this ‘main gateway’ into the body, especially during childhood.
When they’re fighting infection, the tonsils become enlarged. If they become
inflamed as well, the condition is called tonsillitis.
Signs and symptoms of Tonsillitis
The tonsils will appear swollen and red and there may even be spots of pus on the surface of them. Sometimes a whitish membrane forms over the surface of the tonsils. The glands in the neck (lymph nodes) will be swollen and tender to
the touch. Other symptoms may include a sore throat, pain on swallowing, headache,
fever (sometimes a very high temperature in children), generally feeling unwell and
difficulty opening the mouth.
Treatment of Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis may require antibiotic treatment and so you will need to visit your doctor. Surgical removal of the tonsils is carried out much less often these days usually only when the bouts of tonsillitis become frequent and severe or if the condition is causing complications.
In adults and children over 12, an antibacterial and anaesthetic spray like Eludril Spray will usually help alleviate the pain and discomfort of tonsillitis.
