Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, results from the activity of bacteria within dental plaque.
Plaque builds-up on the teeth and if it is not removed regularly with a good oral hygiene routine, will begin to eat away at the tooth enamel.
When the tooth enamel has been eroded, it causes the formation of a tiny hole or cavity on the surface of the enamel, which is known as tooth decay. Through these holes or cavities, the plaque can easily reach into the dentin, which is a softer material supporting the enamel. Eventually the plaque will enter the dental pulp and the nerves become exposed causing pain.
Risk factors for dental caries include diet (added sugars in refined foods such as cakes, biscuits, sweets and soft drinks); poor dental hygiene; dry mouth (saliva has many benefits in preventing tooth decay); smoking; eating disorders and reflux disease.
A few precautions that will help keep tooth decay at bay include:
- Practice good dental hygiene (brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste such as Elgydium Decay Protection and use dental floss)
- Keep regular appointments with your dentist & hyienist
- Replace your toothbrush regularly
- Avoid starchy, sugary foods and drinks
- Eat plenty of fresh foods and vegetables
- Avoid snacking
