Gum Disease In Pregnancy
What Causes Gum Disease In Pregnancy
One of these causes can be attributed to the big increase in hormone levels, particulary progesterone which increase by ten times during pregnancy. These increased levels of progesterone could enhance the growth of bacteria. The immune system can also work differently in pregnant women, causing a different reaction to bacteria which may cause gingivitis.
More research is needed to confirm how gum disease may affect pregnancy outcomes but it would appear that gum disease triggers increased levels of biological fluids that induce labour. Furthermore, data suggests that in women whose gum disease worsens during pregnancy, there may be an even higher risk of having a premature baby.
